The Chief of Police heads the full-time Police Department that serves Upper Merion Township. A captain, 3 lieutenants, 8 sergeants, 10 detectives, 2 juvenile officers and 40 patrol officers assist the Chief. The department also has a civilian staff that includes an animal control officer, one evidence technician, 3 special officers, 6 telecommunicators, a compliment of school crossing guards, a records division, and a secretarial staff. Specialized units within the police department include a Traffic Safety Unit, K-9 Patrol, Emergency Response Team, and a Community Relations Unit. The Traffic Safety Unit is responsible for investigating and analyzing all traffic accidents of a serious nature, responding to and acting upon citizen complaints dealing with highway safety, and for vigorously enforcing all traffic laws within the township. In February of 1999 the police department purchased two canines that are assigned to the Patrol Division. These dogs help to ensure public safety by tracking and apprehending fleeing criminals, as well as explosive detection. The Upper Merion Township Police Department is also an active member of the Central Montgomery County Special Weapons and Tactics Team (C.M.S.W.A.T.) with five tactical officers, one team leader, and one team commander assigned. C.M.S.W.A.T. is comprised of nine-area police departments that respond to incidents of a high-risk nature. The police department also has a full-time Community Relations Officer who, along with fellow officers, works closely with residents, schools, businesses, and the Police Citizens Advisory Board to promote safety, education and crime prevention throughout the township.
