Do you dream of becoming a writer? Here is your chance to get published! Enter Upper Merion Township Library's 42nd Annual Write and Illustrate Your Own Book Contest.


2016 Contest Rules
  • All students in grades Kindergarten through Eighth are eligible to enter.
  • All entries MUST meet requirements in order to be judged. Please use this check list to make sure your entry has addressed each specific requirement:
    • Include a separate page listing Author's and Illustrator's Name, Grade, School, Address, Phone Number, Birth Date, and Book Title.
    • Books can be handwritten or typed, but must be the child's own work.
    • Grammar and spelling will not be judged.
    • Subject of the book must be appropriate for inclusion in our Children's Collection.
    • Handmade illustrations are preferred though computer images are permitted.
    • Each book must have an illustrated front cover for binding purposes.
    • Books must not measure more than 13 inches wide X 11 inches high in total size.
    • Each page must have a 1.5 inch margin on the binding edge of the page for binding purposes. Please set or pencil in margin on each page to use as a spacing guide.
  • Winners will be chosen in each grade and notified by phone on Monday, November 21, 2016.
  • Winning entries will be bound and added to the Upper Merion Township Library's book collection.  First place winners only will receive a bound copy of their book; (winners provides the copy).  Copies of all winning books must be returned to the library no later than Wednesday, January 4, 2017 when they will be sent to the bindery.
  • All winners will receive a gift certificate.  If children have collaborated on a book, the prize awarded will be shared.
  • Two special awards: The Joane F. McNamara award for best story and the Susan Lomax award for best illustrations will be presented at the award ceremony. Winners of these two awards will each receive a $50.00 check and a $50.00 gift certificate. 
  • The contest award gift cards were made possible by a generous grant from the Upper Merion Township Board of Community Assistance.                    
  • All contestants are invited to the 2016 Awards Presentation where they can pick up their book and a certificate of recognition. The ceremony will be held on Sunday, December 4, 2016 in Freedom Hall (located in the Township Building across from the library) at 1:00 pm. Awards for the Summer Reading Art Contest will also be given out at this ceremony.
  • Authors not present at the ceremony who attend Upper Merion Public Schools will receive their books from their school librarian. All other books can be picked up in the Children's Department of the township library.
  • Deadline for entries: Wednesday, October 19, 2016 by 9:00 p.m.
