Collection

Books - The library owns over 30,000 children's books including picture books, children's fiction and non-fiction, award winning books, biographies, mysteries, science fiction, paperback books and paperback series books.

Videos and DVDs - The children's department has a large collection of educational and entertainment videos and DVDs for children including full length feature films for family viewing. Videos check out for one week and there is a $0.60 rental fee per video.

Video Games - The children's department has a growing collection of Video Games for Play Station 2, Wii, and Xbox 360. These include instructional, educational and strategy games. Video games check out for one week with no renewal and there is a $1.00 rental fee per video game.

The Parent/Teacher Collection - This collection includes parenting books, magazines, child development guides, special needs instructional materials, curriculum guides, craft, social studies and science project ideas for home and classroom use.

Paperback Sets - The library owns over 100 sets of popular paperbacks for classroom use. The sets contain between 10 and 15 copies of each title. These books, which we use during the summer for our book discussion groups, are available for teachers for use during the school year. Please contact Jeanne Kauffman or Kristine Pennese for a listing of these titles and to reserve any of these sets.

Toy Collection - The library circulates toys. The children's department has a large collection of trucks, large and small vehicles, puzzles, games, play houses and garages for preschool and older children. Toys check out for three weeks and may be renewed.

CDs - The children's department is expanding its collections of educational and musical CDs for children.

Educational Software - There are over 100 pieces of educational software for preschool children to age 14 available for $1.25 rental fee per week.

Children's Audiobooks - Primarily unabridged versions of popular children's books are available on cassette and CD in the children's department. These are suitable for family listening.

Kits - Cassette tapes and CDs of easy children's books along with the accompanying book check-out together. These kits are particularly helpful for students who are learning to read.

Easy Readers - The children's department owns a large collection of books designed for emerging readers. These books have large print and controlled vocabularies appropriate for children just learning to read. This collection contains a large variety of books with varying degrees of difficulty.

Bridging Books - The Bridging Collection contains picture books and very short chapter books appropriate for students in first grade and beyond who are reading but are not yet ready for long chapter books.

Magazines - The library subscribes to many popular children's magazines including Highlights for Children, Kids Discover, Sports Illustrated for Kids, American Girls and many others. Issues check out for three weeks and may be renewed. Most issues are kept for two years.

Books for Sale - The children's department holds an ongoing sale of used and withdrawn picture books, paperbacks, fiction and nonfiction hardcover books. Other items for sale include children's videos and toys. Prices begin at a nickel! Proceeds from the book sale benefit the Junior Friends of the Library program.
