Each Fall for more than 40 years, the Upper Merion Township Public Works Department begins its annual leaf collection program. The program collects more than 1,500 tons of leaves each year and composts them on a 5-acre site on West Beidler Road. The resulting mulch is provided free to residents. The composting program is completely natural and no chemicals are involved. Residents may also deposit their leaves directly at the site between 7 am and 3 pm weekdays, 8 am to 4 pm on Saturdays, and 12 pm to 4 pm on Sundays through December. (It will then be closed on weekends until after Easter 2009.) The Township collects loose leaves that have been raked to curbside, as well as leaves in biodegradeable paper bags. Plastic bags are not accepted. Leaves and bags should be curbside on the Monday of the week scheduled for a particular neighborhood. Leaf piles can be two feet wide and should not block stormwater drains. Weather permitting, there will be a final sweep of all neighborhoods after the scheduled pickups in December. Christmas trees are collected in January. Place the bare tree near the curb for collection. Guidelines: To be collected, leaves MUST be raked to the curb or be in biodegradeable paper (not plastic) leaf bags along your curb. Paper bags are available at the Township Building or Genuardis Market.
