Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19th, is a day of profound historical significance for the United States, and here in Upper Merion Township, we take this opportunity to reflect on the past, honor the struggles of those who fought for freedom, and celebrate the resilience and contributions of African Americans.
What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed that they were free, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Although the proclamation had been signed in 1863, its reach was limited, especially in Confederate states like Texas. It wasn’t until Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, that the last enslaved people were informed of their freedom. This day is now celebrated as Juneteenth, a symbol of the end of slavery and the beginning of a long journey toward equality and justice.
