The Market’s 10th season is fast approaching – that’s right, 10th season! Started back in 2010, the Market has grown from a small volunteer operation with a few vendors to a township entity and one of the largest markets in the Philadelphia area.
This year saw a lot of growth at the Market – with an increase in both customers and vendors. The Market also continues to grow in unique ways to serve the community. This winter, the Market moved inside the township building, which has been a huge success. Residents and vendors alike enjoy the ease and convenience of shopping for fresh foods and artisan gifts in the comfort of the building. The Indoor Winter Market runs every other Saturday until May 4.
So what can you expect on May 18 when we open for our 10th season? More, more, more – we have a more diverse lineup of products than ever before. Since last year, we have added over 20 new vendors to our rotation, five of whom are based right here in Upper Merion. This season will also see the continuation and growth of some of our community’s most popular events, like the Zucchini 500, Family Fun Day, Health & Wellness Day, Fall Festival & Fiber Arts Day, Spooktacular & Barktoberfest, and Chili Cook-off. Special events will take place on the second Saturday of every month except August and the second and fourth Saturdays of October.
So what are the benefits of farmers markets? Farmers markets are good for the planet, your health, and your community.
Food from the Market travels a substantially shorter distance than food from a supermarket or big box store – lower mileage equals lower carbon emissions. Also, local farms help protect and manage much needed open space in the Delaware Valley.
The Market not only promotes healthy eating, but also the importance of living an active lifestyle. Not just a great place to pick up fruits, vegetables, and artisan foods, the Market routinely partners with the Community Center, Library, and Lafayette Ambulance to promote all the health and lifestyle services available in the township.
The Market also serves as the unofficial town square of the township. Every Saturday, we transform the parking lot behind the township building into a community hub – a place where people from all over the region meet and grow our community. Our special events are also a great way to meet and interact with your neighbors!
